Restorative Dentistry in Owings Mills, MD

Restorative Dentistry to Improve Your Dental Health

Do you hide your smile because your teeth are less than perfect? Do you want your smile to reflect good dental health? Damaged or missing teeth can affect your quality of life and undermine your confidence. You may find a smile on your face after having Dr. Jonathan Silverman, a restorative dentist in Owings Mills, MD, renew your oral health.

What Is Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative dentistry is dental care that prevents or treats tooth disease. This care can restore the health of your mouth and correct damaged or missing teeth. It can allow you to keep a damaged tooth, help you chew your food completely, and speak more clearly.

Restorative dental care covers a variety of procedures and may be used for:

  • Bridges. Bridges are often used when you have one or more missing teeth. Dental bridges can fill gaps and may be fixed or cemented in place.
  • Dentures. These removable teeth are made of acrylic resin or porcelain. Other types of dentures may not be removable, such as dentures anchored by dental implants. A removable partial denture can be used to replace one or more teeth as an alternative to a fixed bridge. Partial dentures may be made of plastic or a metal and plastic mix. If all your teeth must be replaced, you will need a complete set of dentures.
  • Extractions. Sometimes a tooth must be removed. This happens when Dr. Silverman finds a serious infection or large cavity. Sometimes a tooth may be extracted to make way for braces, bridges, implants, or dentures.
  • Cavities. If you have a cavity, it will first be filled with gold, silver, porcelain, or composite material. A crown may then be placed on that tooth if it was a deep cavity.

What to Expect

Normally, Dr. Silverman begins by taking x-rays in his dentist office. He then applies a topical numbing medicine to the affected area. Next, he will give you an anesthetic to prevent pain. The numbing should occur right away. Once that happens, dental procedures begin.

Dr. Silverman may ask that you take precautions for 24 hours following the procedure. These include eating a diet of soft foods, cold foods, or warm soup.
