Dentures and Partials in Owings Mills, MD

Complete and Partial Dentures: An Overview

Missing a tooth or several teeth can cause big problems in your daily life. You may find completely chewing your food is hard or speaking clearly is awkward. Perhaps you don’t smile as often. What can you do? A dentist can help to restore your smile with custom-made tooth replacements. Visit your local dentist, Dr. Jonathan Silverman, at his Owings Mills, MD, office. He can fit you with affordable cosmetic dentures that will help you enjoy life to the fullest.

Complete or Partial, Removable or Permanent

Dentists today use natural-looking, high-quality materials like acrylic resin. Made to look like your natural teeth and gums, they can be removable or permanently anchored. Complete dentures replace all your teeth. Partial dentures fill the gaps when you need to replace just a few or several teeth. Partials may even prevent existing teeth from loosening and shifting in place. The dentist can attach them to healthy teeth or dental implants.

Complete dentures can be made to replace all your teeth, or just the top or bottom row. They are made to be either removable or permanent. Conventional types are removable. They stay in place in your mouth by suction. Sometimes, adding a layer of dental adhesive will be needed to keep your dentures from shifting when you speak or eat.

Dr. Silverman recommends using implant-supported dentures if at all possible. Made to be permanent,  and thus not removable, the implants themselves are used to replace your tooth roots. The dentures are securely attached to the roots. The dentist will set the implants in place, resulting in smiles that look like they’re your natural teeth.

Whether removable or permanent, your new dentures can restore your oral health, allowing you to:

  • Enjoy eating a normal, healthy diet
  • Return your natural talking ability
  • Feel more confident knowing that, even when you smile with your teeth showing, people will see a full set of teeth
  • Experience reduced changes to your mouth’s bite.

What to Expect

The dentist will meet with you to determine your dental health, answer questions, and explain your options. Impressions will be made to custom-tailor your new teeth, and diagnostic imaging such as x-rays may be taken. If you have opted for implants, more advanced diagnostic techniques may be used.

Once your teeth are removed, your gums may take anywhere from eight to twelve weeks to completely heal. You will be given a temporary set of dentures to use while your mouth heals and your permanent ones are being made. Once the permanent dentures are complete, Dr. Silverman will fit them and explain their care. If they’re being secured by implants, the dentist will permanently attach them.
